I reach my hand blindly but accurately out of the shower to grab one of the best things since sliced bread – a towel. Have you ever thought about how handy towels are? Have you ever wondered who invented towels and where they came from? Me too … but I never got around to finding out about it. I watch the History Channel hoping for Modern Marvels or some such show to tell me who invented the towel and where it came from, but to no avail.
I googled “towels” and all I got were stores selling them. I googled “Where did towels come from” and it told me I hand too narrow a search and to remove the quotes. When I did then I got stores selling towels again. I went to encyclopedia.com and towels are only listed in text for other items. I could not find the inventor or the creator or even where the first one was found. So I have made up my own history of the towel.
Adam and Eve went swimming in a creek one day and they weren’t quite used to the new clothes God made for them. They swam apart since they were embarrassed now with their nakedness. Adam pulled off his new animal skin jumper and hopped in the water throwing his new clothes in a pile on shore. Eve carefully folder her jumper in a neat pile on a rock so it wouldn’t get wet, you know how bad leather smells when it is wet. After frolicking in the water for a while Adam goes to the beach to pull on his jumper while dripping wet. He can’t seem to get it on right. He yells to Eve, “how does this thing work?” “Just pull it over your head and down!” yells Eve back. Frustrated now from the cold and water still dripping from his hair into his eyes he yanks it down over his head, but he notices that it picks up all the water off his face as it goes down. “Haaaaayeee!” says Adam as an idea strikes him. Towels are invented.
Maybe Noah, after 40 days and 40 nights of rain, looks out the small window on the ark for the 10th time today and gets a face full of water. Still blinded from the water he reaches around and finds his hands and face buried in a lion’s mane. “Haaaaayeee!” says Noah and towels are invented.
I don’t know, I would be interested and in finding out though. So if you know email me! Majoring in minutia is a hobby of mine. But it helps me to appreciate this wonderful life given us and the amazing creative talents living here.
