I went to a concert this week and was taken away by music. Music penetrates the mind in ways that words never will. I can hear a song and find myself transported back to a time when that song had an impact on my life. Whenever I hear the song "WAR" I am transported to the back seat of my parents car driving back from Indianapolis where I was in a talent contest and was given a transistor radio and that was the song I heard on it. When I hear the Elton John song "Blue eyes, my baby's got blue eyes." I am transported back to the birth of my daughter who's striking blues eyes looked at me minutes after she opened them for the first time.
I find myself singing a song BEFORE I am conscious of hearing it on the radio. There are songs that make me cry when I hear them (Butterfly Kisses) and songs that lift my spirits when I hear them (Walking on Sunshine). Songs that I can sing well and songs that I wish I could sing. I love well-done musicals where the emotions are passed through music in ways that simple dialogue never could.
Some songs resonate with your soul and some songs are dissonant. Some songs allow you to lie down as if on a soft pillow and others demand you get up and move. Songs soak through your skin, echo through your bones, synchronize with your heart and penetrate your soul. There is a danger here also. While music penetrates your soul it also allows others a glimpse of that same soul. The music that resonates with you tells others the makeup of that hidden part of you. When violent music penetrates your soul we know something about you. When sexually charged music resonates with your soul we know something about what is inside you. When the only thing that gets through is "Row, row, row your boat" then we know something about you.
While music can move you to wonderful and amazing feelings and actions it can also move you to negative ones as well. What is in your CD player? Which stations are you listening to? What concerts do you go to? What does that say about the condition of your soul?
