I stood in the laundry room taking my dry, clean clothes out of the dryer and folding them. Left over was all of the socks and they lay on top the washer waiting to be sorted into pairs. Without getting too personal, you should know that I only have three colors in socks. I have no stripes, no wild colors and no creativity at all in my choice of footwear. The white socks I use when golfing or working outside are easy to find and sort. The few black socks I have are also easy to spot and match up. But my gray socks, by far my most common because they match my two business suits, are difficult to match up. Today I stood with one sock in hand sorting through the ones on the washer trying to find it's pair. Finally I realized that if I had this hard of time distinguishing one grey sock from another I really didn't have to worry about sorting them now did I? Suddenly my laundry duty became a lot easier.
I remember the stories of Einstein who had only one color suit, pants and shirt but seven exact matches of them. Each morning he would spend very little brain time on deciding what to wear, I like that idea. There are some things that are worth spending the brainpower on and something's that are not. The trick is telling what is and what isn't.
Isn't that the way life is too? I could look at the kitchen and see just a few things in my way as I try to build my lunch. My wife can look at the same kitchen and go ballistic because nothing is cleaned up and she can't even make a glass of water. I open the fridge and see stuff growing on cheese, Tupperware with some hidden contents, last month's milk and I go nuts. What is important and worth sorting out? Marriage has a way of changing your daily sort. So does any new relationship or any new job. You find out what is important and what can be ignored.
A piece of advise ... when you find yourself in the laundry room wondering what is important to sort and what is not ... ask questions AND listen for answers. Let me say that again ... ASK and then LISTEN! You will find life is so much better with the properly sorted socks.
