Lastly, Genetic Engineering is already a part of your life. All of us benefit from this manipulation of genes in everyday life. From the food you eat to the clothes you wear to the drugs you take. The Goliath has impacted all of us. Just a sampling of this in your life:
- - Cotton, used in most clothing, has been genetically engineered for ease of harvesting, for resistance to weevils and for fuller "cotton-ness."
- - Grain, used in our breads, oils, and even Ethanol gasoline supplements, has been engineered to resist bugs, resist herbicides, and grow bigger.
- - Pigs have been engineered to grow medicine and organs for humans.
- - Plants have been engineered to grow in deserts without water.
- - Cows engineered to produce more milk and stronger calves.
I just read this week that glowing fish are now available for purchase. These fish were developed to identify problems in our oceans and now they look great in tanks because they glow red under a black light. I have to get me some of those and have my own neon glowing school of fish.
It is safe to say that Genetic Engineering has already affected you. Why are we so scared of human engineering? If we believe that our Creator has given us this creative ability and is constantly watching over us, and that he NEVER slumbers or sleeps or takes breaks. Then we must believe that Genetic Engineering is controllable and even good.
Let us get into the debate to set the moral guidelines. Let us uncover our ears and open our minds to the amazing possibilities that this next step is presenting us. Morality left in the hands of JUST the scientists becomes a matter of efficiency and not a matter of the heart and soul, as it should be.
